I just happened to be looking around for some news to talk about on here and I came across some thing that interested me. I saw a news article about a court in Washington saying that there was nothing illegal and it was technically "OK" for a teacher to have consensual sex with an 18 year old. It all started when a choir teacher supposedly had sex with an 18 year old in Seattle, Washington. Although the teacher still claimed he never did this, he would finally be able to go back to teaching, since he hadn't been able to teach since late 2006. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28654219/ Now onto my opinion about this subject, I feel that as though they are technically right about its legal for a teacher to have agreed sex with an 18 year old. I feel that having relationships within a school isn't right, there is a chance of being favored and getting special treatment. Just like with a job, most jobs don't allow relationships within the job. There is the chance of special treatment just like with a teacher and a student. So all in all it just doesn't work out, stay away from co-workers, your teachers, or your students when it comes to relationships.
Here is a video I really found interesting about why teachers have sex with students. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hENut2cMMHQ It showed more of a emotional reason for this happening with students and their teachers. Their idea is that teachers are going for students because the teachers haven't really grown into their mature level of sexuality. That there is something mentally unstable about these teachers who can't find someone their age or their maturity level. For my opinion there is certainly something wrong with this concept of teachers and students, something that is very deep and emotional within that person. Most people I know don't think to much about this idea, they either think it's "hot" and those students are real lucky to "get with" their teachers or that it's a really messed up situation, and that's it, they have nothing much else to say about it.

I totally agree that there should be no relationship between a teacher and a student. Like you said that maturaty level is totally different. I also feel that waking up one day and being 18 doesnt make it ok for some 30 year old man or women to be able to have sex with you. A teacher-student relationship should stay professional. I believe that a teacher can also play a role as a mentor or someone a student feels they can talk to, but thats as far as the relationship should go.
ReplyDeleteI can see where the teacher-student relationship develops. They see eachother everyday and the student gains trust from the teacher. But i think that teacher should be mature enough and professional enough to know that its wrong, even if they want to have a sexual relationship with the student.
I dont agree that its OK for a teacher to have a relationship with a student, at any level of education.
I agree a 100% Nicole! For teachers and students to have any relationship more than the student-teacher relationship, it does cause favorism, and yet I am sure stress too.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned also, relationships in the workplace, and those too, can be a huge problem. Makes it hard for the people to work together if they're doing good or in a fight.
i guess i do agree with Nicole for the most part. I know that there are some young teachers that are 22 years old teaching and i dont think that would be wrong if they had a relationship with an 18 year student. I had read articles before that college teachers have gotten in trouble for having relationships with there students as well. I guess in the long run in both work and teaching you should just try and avoid relationships with students and co workers.
